Heating Assistance

Bringing Warmth and Safety to Navajo Homes in Winter

Through our Outreach Assistance Program, we provide life-saving heating support to Navajo families during the harsh winter months.

This includes delivering warm clothing, blankets, firewood, propane, and wood-burning stoves, as well as helping with past-due electric bills. Our team also repairs walls, roofs, doors, and windows to keep homes safe and protected from freezing temperatures.

These images of our home repair projects show how your support brings warmth, safety, and stability to families in need.
Before repairs: a home with drafty walls and limited insulation.
Old stove awaiting replacement—many homes still rely on outdated heating, making new installs essential for safety.
A family stays warm by their stove and firewood—critical support during freezing nights.
New wood-burning stove installed, providing a safe and reliable source of heat for winter.
Roof repairs underway to seal leaks and protect families from harsh weather.
New chimney installation improves ventilation and heating efficiency.
Midway through renovations: walls reinforced and insulated for better warmth and safety.
Completed home improvements, including a new entryway and ramp for accessibility.

Many families on the Eastern Navajo Reservation still live in traditional wooden hogans with dirt floors and drafty walls. Nearly one-third of homes have no electricity, and of those that do, only about 25% use it for heating. Winters in this region are bitterly cold, putting thousands of families at risk of hypothermia or worse.
