This prestigious grant will best serve the Navajo people in our Meals on Wheels program of the Eastern Navajo Reservation
“The vision of St. Bonaventure Indian Mission is to provide the people of the Eastern Navajo Reservation an opportunity to develop self-sufficiency through education, employment, housing assistance, and outreach services”. That includes the Meals on Wheels program.
Since 1974, the Mission has supplied food, water, and clothing to the elderly and families who do not have access to these most basic needs. In, 2004 Meals on Wheels was established at St. Bonaventure. Our program is devised to be that Elderly Men and Women are our top priority. Through our program families are instilled with hope and self confidence.
The Meals on Wheels program helps Navajo families, remain independent, maintain good health, manage their own affairs, find needed assistance or care, and live with dignity. The program provides nutritious meals made at the St. Bonaventure Indian Mission School cafeteria. Meals are delivered daily to the elderly, physically challenged, homebound individuals, recently hospitalized or those individuals disabled who are confined in a wheelchair.
Each meal is made with the approval of a St. Bonaventure Indian Mission Nutritionists. $1,642.71 is spent per month to feed 60 people, twice a week. One to four individuals in a household receive meals; that are delivered twice a week.
Mrs. Charlene Begay the Meals on Wheels, food delivery coordinator delivers much needed food to the Navajo people. She is trained and certified in CPR, and First Aid. Daily wellness checks are made on her visits with clients. She travels between 60-90 miles per day.
In conclusion, your grant allows us to continue serving the Navajo people and to be a beacon of light.
